Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript has not been previously published and is not under review elsewhere.
  • The manuscript and accompanying cover letter follow the Author Guidelines.
  • Author contact details adhere to the submission requirements.

Author Guidelines

Written Contributions
Manuscripts should typically range from 3,500 to 6,000 words. Longer texts may be accepted with proper justification. See "Aims and Scope" for more information about expected contribution types. When in doubt, consult a member of the Editorial Board.

Multimedia Contributions
Authors planning to submit audio, video, or mixed media content should first contact the Managing Editor. The core checklist below also applies to these submissions.

Types of Submissions
Authors should indicate the type of their submission:

  • Essay – Argumentative or conceptual papers, grounded in theory or empirical insights.

  • Exchange – A collection of essays or responses addressing one topic.

  • Commentary – Short analyses, reflections on practice, reviews of concepts or prototypes.

  • Review – Book or article reviews with critical and scholarly depth.

  • Conversation – Edited transcripts or recordings of interviews or discussions.

  • Performance – Documented experimental, performative, or artistic contributions.

Submission Checklist

Manuscript Requirements:

  • Clear and informative title
  • Abstract (up to 200 words)
  • Up to 10 keywords
  • A “Highlights” section (max. 5 bullet points, each ≤120 characters)
  • Numbered section headings
  • All figures/tables in-text with captions
  • Define abbreviations at first use
  • Use either footnotes or endnotes (not both)
  • Supplementary materials (if applicable)
  • Optional: graphical abstract
  • Language: English (British or American, not both), or German
  • Proofread for grammar and inclusive language
  • References cited in-text and listed
  • Reference formatting: APA (use of reference software encouraged)

Cover Letter to Editors:

  • Full contact details (institutional email and postal address) for all authors; indicate corresponding author
  • Briefly explain the manuscript’s topic and motivation
  • Identify the contribution’s angle on Collective Intelligence and/or systemic principles
  • Characterize academic or practical field(s) relevant to your work
  • Indicate preferred review process (double-blind or open)
  • Confirm permissions for copyrighted material
  • Include a funding statement (for transparency)
  • Acknowledge other types of support received
  • Include a competing interest statement (required even if none)
  • List contributions of each author (e.g., using CRediT taxonomy)
  • Disclose any use of AI tools (e.g., LLMs) in manuscript development, analysis, or preparation
  • Provide a list of related submissions by the same authors
  • Suggest potential peer reviewers with full contact details, affiliation, profile URL, and relationship to authors
  • (Optional) Suggest individuals to provide critical commentary on your piece

  • Institutional email addresses are required for all co-authors
  • ORCID IDs must be provided for all authors

  • communicate regarding publication decisions and editorial matters,
